Handloom Tussar Silk Mekhela Sador | Red and Gold
Handloom Tussar Silk Mekhela Sador | Red and Gold
The traditional outfit of Assam, India consists of two pieces: the mekhela, a skirt that’s wrapped around and tucked into the petticoat, and the sador, a long drape that brings grace to the ensemble.
This pure tassar silk mekhela sador has been handwoven on traditional looms. The silk has been woven in its natural golden colour. The motifs have been woven using cotton yarn.
Tussar silk has a naturally golden hue due to the unique qualities of the silkworms that produce it, primarily the Antheraea mylitta and other wild silkworm species. Unlike mulberry silkworms, which produce a more white or off-white silk, Tussar silkworms feed on leaves from trees like 'arjun' and 'asan', resulting in a silk that retains earthy, golden tones. This natural golden tint, combined with Tussar’s rich texture, gives it a distinct warmth and lustrous appeal that sets it apart from other silks. Tussar silk feels light and crisp against the skin.
