Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu, is one of the most vibrant and cherished festivals celebrated in Assam. It marks the end of the harvesting season and is observed during the Assamese month of Magh (January). This festival is a time to express gratitude to nature for a bountiful harvest, enjoy the fruits of hard work, and come together as a community to share joy and festivity.
The essence of Magh Bihu lies in its celebration of abundance and togetherness. People begin the festivities on Uruka, the night before Bihu, by lighting bonfires and preparing a grand community feast. Traditional Assamese dishes such as pithas, larus, and other delicacies made from rice, sesame, and jaggery take centre stage. The morning of Bihu begins with Meji burning – a ceremonial bonfire symbolising the offering of prayers to the fire god for prosperity and protection.
In earlier times, Magh Bihu was also a time for traditional sports and games, including buffalo fights, egg fights, and tekeli bhonga (pot-breaking). The festival exudes a sense of camaraderie, as families and friends gather to celebrate the spirit of harvest and abundance.
An integral part of Magh Bihu is embracing Assamese traditions, and what better way to celebrate than by adorning the timeless mekhela sador? This traditional attire not only reflects Assamese culture but also adds an elegant touch to the festivities. mekhela sadors, made from exquisite fabrics like eri silk or mulberry silk, are perfect for festive occasions.
The intricate weaves and motifs of mekhela sadors often carry stories of Assamese heritage, making them more than just garments—they are a celebration of artistry and identity. Wearing a mekhela sador for Magh Bihu is not just about tradition; it’s a statement of pride in Assam’s rich cultural tapestry. Pair it with traditional jewellery like junbiri or dholbiri to complete the festive look, and step into the celebrations with grace and authenticity.
